We often find ourselves in the course of evaluating health and disease, depending on the information that can be gleaned with diagnostic testing. Every medical speciality has a repertoire of tests that tend to define a diagnostic core. Central to the understanding of respiratory issues are pulmonary function studies. Some time ago, I recall being told that treating lung disorders without the aide of pulmonary function studies (PFTs), is like trying to treat hypertension without a blood pressure cuff.
Before we get into the specifics, we must first define what constitutes pulmonary function studies. This list is ever expanding and will vary based on your practice location.
During the course of your rotation, we may have the opportunity to discuss the indications and interpretation of most of the above. Here, however, we will focus on what in most situations constritutes classic PFTs.
